Birth Story Photography by Catherine Brown
There is so much I could write about this incredible family and their lives and their path to meet their beautiful baby girl. I love them all so dearly. They are family to me. I am going to try to do my best to keep this short and sweet and let the images tell the story of Lexi’s hypnobirth at home.
Tarla has been one of my closest friends since we were 13 years old. When we were 18, her daughter Jade, was born. It was so incredible to be right there with Tarla through her pregnancy, labour, birth and postpartum and of course all throughout Jade’s life whom is now almost the same age as we were when she was born. You are welcome to do the math on that one.
In 2010 Tarla married her sweetheart Rob whom also had a daughter (Sabriena). It was a small and cozy beautiful backyard wedding full of love, tears and family union. Not only did Tarla marry her best friend and love of her life but she gained a daughter and Jade and Sabriena became sisters. Rob is such a loving and supportive husband and father. He’s an all around great guy and I’m so glad Tarla and him found each other. They are so happy and in love. It fills my heart with joy.
Fast forward to the summer of 2016 and Tarla and Rob found out that they had a baby on the way. Everyone was so vey excited. What a lucky baby this would be to be born into so much love.
Plans were made for a homebirth. A very different experience than with Jade’s hospital birth 17 years ago. Because they live in Selkirk, Manitoba it was decided that the homebirth would take place in Winnipeg at Doreen’s place (Tarla’s mom). It goes to show just how close this family is.
It was so awesome to have Doula prenatal meetings with everyone. Rob and my husband Ian even had an evening so they could talk birth & homebirth from a Dad’s perspective. Jade & Sabriena were always so interested in the meetings and full of birthy questions each time we met up. What a gift they were given to be a part of and witness birth at the ages of 17 & 22. We do women (and men) such a disservice by hiding birth, not talking about birth and wrongly portraying birth…..imagine if we all learnt about birth and witnessed birth before our time came to birth or be involved in birth. It really is something almost all people experience directly or indirectly…… ok that’s another topic for another day
After a few teasers I got the call on the night of March 29th that things were really picking up and when my Doula suggestion of “deny until you can no longer deny” really made sense and Tarla said “ok *now* I know what you meant” we knew this was it. It was time to meet baby.
We met at Doreen’s around midnight and everyone was ready for the birthday party! Midwives arrived shortly after. Tarla also wanted all her closest friends and family there and the house was full of excitement, love and support. She was truly surrounded and fully supported.
The plan was to have a waterbirth in the bedroom she used to call her own but baby had other ideas and before we knew it Tarla had settled into her space in Doreen’s room. She was where she was meant to be. There was no time or need to change scenery. The rushes kept on coming and Tarla laboured peacefully and beautifully. This was the first time I have attended a hypnobirth and it was an honour to be a part of it. The only indicator that she was having a rush was her belly contracting. Her eyes were closed and she was in her zone doing just what she needed and what worked for her and baby. She looked as though she was peacefully asleep most of the time. Gosh she is just so incredible. I am so proud of her and all that she did to prepare for this. Her wonderful birth team all did their part and it was such a fun atmosphere having so many people all there supporting her and of course each other too. There were lots of tears of joy and excitement and no matter which way you turned there were arms waiting to hold and hug you.
At 5:48 am on March 30th, 2017 baby Lexi made her grand entrance and was welcomed into a room full of love and tears all around. There was not a dry eye to be found. She was born in her Grandmas bed and in the home that Tarla & Jade both used to call home.
Welcome Lexi! You are so loved and I am so excited to be a part of your life.

Some lovely words from Tarla: We had the pleasure of having Catherine as our birth photographer and as our Doula, she is absolutely amazing! Catherine is a very friendly, loving and passionate person, who absolutely loves what she does and it completely shows in her work. It was truly amazing to see my labor and delivery from a different perspective. I had my eyes closed in deep meditation most of the time so I missed everyone else’s reactions and emotions. It all happened so fast that my memory of this special time is kind of a blur and this is why I will forever be grateful to Catherine for being able to capture this amazing experience in my life. She was able to capture it in such a beautiful way that I will treasure these pictures for my lifetime. Every time I look through the birth gallery it brings me right back to that night that my beautiful baby girl was brought into this world. Thank you so much Catherine for sharing your love and talent, you are truly amazing at what you do!
With love and gratitude,
