Birth Story Photography ~ Baby’s First Gift

Birth Story Photography by Catherine Brown Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

I know we often think about birth story photography as a gift for the parents. Of course it is not only a gift for the parents but also for siblings, grandparents, extended family and friends but let’s not forget what a wonderful gift it will be for your baby.

It’s the first gift you will give to your little one and a gift that they will have always and cherish forever.

Imagine sitting down together each year on their birthday and looking through a beautiful album celebrating them and the day they were born. Cuddling up every year on their special day to tell and show them their birth story. What an incredibly special tradition this will soon become.

I know what you might be imagining ~ Why would they want to see that? I get that and really like to talk about this actually! We often associate birth photography with only the crowning images. Although some of the clients I work with love and really want these images (and I’m always game for that if they do) others prefer to not have them taken and/or only keep certain images to themselves in a separate folder. This is absolutely ok. The story of your baby’s birth can be told with or without those shots so if you’re not wanting those shots no problem. There is so much more to the story. I am known for my creative angles and am always shooting your birth story with your vision in mind. I position myself in the room based on what we have already discussed and we go over this all in advance. Plus I have some yogi skills to move around quickly, quietly and gracefully as needed in the moment. We discuss this all in our prenatal meeting so even if you might not know what to expect we will cover it.

My goal is to tell the entire story from the time I arrive during your active labour to the time I leave when baby is a couple hours new. It’s not just about that one moment. It’s all the big moments and all the little ones in-between. I will capture love, support, emotion, first looks and fresh baby images too. The first time you hold your little one. Tiny fingers. Tiny toes.

We all take pictures throughout our lives and at all the happiest times. We share those images for years to come. Often we hire professionals on the biggest most significant days. Your baby’s birth is one of the most important and most significant days there will be in your life and of course in their life. I would love to document this day for you and as a gift for your baby so you can tell them their story through beautiful professional images. This is truly a gift to your little one that they will never outgrow.

If you’d like to meet me and chat some more I’d love to take you out for a coffee or tea and show you an entire gallery of my work and answer all your questions. It’s never to early or too late to get in touch.

I am payment plan friendly and also offer gift registry and gift certificates. I also offer custom packages that include photography, doula care and other birth services to best suit each family’s needs.

Here is just a small glimpse into what Birth Story Photography looks like when we work together:

The Labour ~ I love to capture partners working as a team, the beauty and strength of labour progressing, small details of the birth space, intimate moments, quiet times of rest, dads, partners, doulas and health care providers supporting mom

The Birth – The moment of birth ~ My goal is to capture baby’s very first moments entering the world, Mom’s, Dad’s, Partner’s reactions the first time they see their new baby. Their reaction to each other. Tears, joy, love, first looks, happiness. I really love for the birth team to just be able to stay present in this moment and not have to worry about taking any pictures. Leave that up to me. This is also often a time in the story that can be hard to look back upon and remember clearly because you are completely present in that moment and are flooded with so many emotions. Having images to look back upon can take you right back and you are able to feel and live that joy over and over again and of course share that memory with your baby and others.

Fresh Baby & Newborn Exam – There are so many incredible moments and wonderful details once baby has arrived. This is a huge part of the story and is one that is often not taken into consideration as a part of what I offer. I love to capture the first latch, cord cutting, fingers, toes, wispy new baby hair, first time Dad/Partner holds baby, skin to skin, placenta, first diaper and so much more. I also stay for the newborn exam to capture baby’s weight and length. Your baby will change so much in those first few hours. You really cannot get a more “newborn” session than this.
